The Alchemy of Collaboration
How My Novel was Sparked, then Evolved by a Meeting of Minds
Inspiration rarely arrives with a complete plotline. More often, it starts with a random, unscripted moment - like the frantic gabbling of turkeys at dawn.
That was how my collaboration with Jil began, ultimately leading to my novel, Long Stay at Ryan’s Waterhole.
While staying overnight at the Tirranna Springs Roadhouse on the Savannah Way in North Queensland, I woke early and walked down the paddock to investigate a strange noise. There, I met Jil.
As we talked, we noticed the resident turkeys fell silent whenever we spoke, only to start up again the moment there was a lull in our conversation, as if they wanted to participate. Jil also shared that her daughter’s pet duck had just laid an egg on her pillow, forcing a sudden name change from Edward to Edwina.
It felt like perfect material for a children’s picture book, and our connection began there.
Months later, back in Melbourne, we continued corresponding via email. While I initially envisioned a whimsical children's book series about her kids and their pets, our conversations naturally deepened. I became fascinated by Jil's own background - how she had left Germany for a working holiday, fell in love with the Outback and her husband Tim, and stayed to build a life running a roadhouse.
I eventually asked if I could write her biography. She generously agreed and began expanding on her life story. However, as we moved forward, it became clear to both of us that a straight biography wasn't the right fit. I was disappointed; without realising it, I had already invested heavily in the unique atmosphere of the Gulf Country and Jil's experiences.
Then came the turning point. I emailed Jil: "Why don’t I write it as a novel? I could still incorporate some aspects of your life into a fictional story about the Outback." She agreed. To create the necessary creative distance from her actual life, I changed the core details: my protagonist became a French traveller on a quest to find her father. I didn't know exactly where the plot would go, but I trusted the vivid imagery Jil had shared with me to bring the Gulf Country to life.
The creative process took an unexpected turn when the Gulf Country experienced a severe, devastating flood that engulfed the Tirranna homestead and roadhouse. It was a chaotic and difficult time for Jil and her family, yet she selflessly encouraged me to use the situation for the book. That real-world event provided the final momentum needed to bring the fictional narrative to its conclusion.
Ultimately, this project redefined my understanding of collaboration. When a creative partnership involves a genuine meeting of minds, the individual output can far exceed your original expectations. With Jil metaphorically beside me, I was able to capture the spirit of the Gulf Country and its people in ways I never could have dreamed of at the start of writing.
