Why Being Proudly Human Matters

In a world where artificial intelligence can now generate stories, poems and even novels at the click of a button, the question of authentic authorship has never been more important. Readers are increasingly asking: Who really wrote this? What experiences, observations and emotions shaped these words?

That’s why I’m proud to have my books registered with Proudly Human - an international initiative dedicated to recognising and protecting genuinely human-created work.

What is Proudly Human?

Proudly Human is a voluntary certification program for writers, artists and creators who want to clearly signal that their work is created by a human - not generated or assisted by artificial intelligence. Books and creative works registered with Proudly Human are independently verified and awarded the ProudlyHuman™ mark, offering readers transparency and reassurance about the origins of what they are reading.

This isn’t about rejecting technology altogether; it’s about clarity, honesty and trust. In an increasingly crowded digital landscape, Proudly Human helps readers distinguish between content produced by algorithms and stories shaped slowly, thoughtfully and deliberately by a person.

Why this matters to me as a writer

My writing grows out of lived experience: conversations across generations, time spent observing landscapes and people, moments of uncertainty, humour and quiet transformation. These are not things that can be meaningfully automated. They come from attention, memory, curiosity, and from the long, sometimes messy process of putting words together and revising them until they feel true.

Registering my books with Proudly Human is a way of affirming that commitment. It’s a promise to readers that every sentence has been written by me, in my own voice, without AI assistance, shaped by years of reading, thinking, teaching, travelling and listening.

Why readers might care

For readers, the Proudly Human mark offers confidence. It says: this book wasn’t generated in seconds; it was crafted. It carries the fingerprints of a real person; their choices, hesitations, humour and worldview.

At a time when digital content is plentiful and often disposable, human-made stories still offer something irreplaceable: connection. Knowing that a book is proudly, deliberately human allows readers to engage more deeply with the work, and with the person behind it.

Looking ahead

Initiatives like Proudly Human play an important role in shaping the future of creative work. They support transparency, protect creative labour, and help ensure that human voices remain visible and valued.

I’m honoured to be part of this movement, and grateful to readers who continue to seek out stories that are written slowly, thoughtfully, and entirely by hand and heart.
